life feels like uncharted waters until you use your map

how I charted my own way

As a philosophical counselor, astrologer, and intuitive empath, I work with women who are facing existential crossroads so they may create new, exciting plans for themselves and move forward with hope, vitality, and joy.  Additionally, I specifically provide support to mothers looking to strengthen their unique connection to each of their children by better understanding them as individuals seeking belonging as their authentic selves.

After growing up in the Philly suburbs, I spent twenty years working as a professional student, researcher, and college educator in philosophy.  My specialties include feminist ethics and philosophy, as well as social and political philosophy.  Before completing my PhD in philosophy, I taught college courses, including Introduction to Philosophy, Ethics and Contemporary Moral Problems, and the Philosophy of Sex and Love.  While working as an adjunct gave me flexibility as an instructor for many years, my life changed and my priorities changed with it.  After fourteen years of classroom instruction, I left academia to pursue my own business as a philosophical counselor because I wanted to use philosophy on my own terms to help other women reawaken to their own potential.

Behind the scenes, however, I quietly pursued an additional passion to learn astrology.  In a funny twist, a former student had introduced me to astrology and natal chart reading after we covered an introductory unit on free will in class. Because of his encouragement, I made it a point to study exhaustively my own natal chart. The more I learned about my own chart and the people closest to me—especially my own children’s charts—the more clarity I achieved to make small and large decisions on a daily basis.  The fabric of my daily life involves myriad relationships of varying depth. (Perhaps you can relate?) All of them have become dramatically easier to navigate with my combined background in philosophy and astrology.  It’s not because I magically have access to the chart of every person I encounter: It's because I know my own chart and my own relationship to my values, a gift from my philosophy education and years of teaching.

When I’m not working, this Virgo is typically juggling Mom Life (my MC is in Cancer): taking my two girls wherever they need to go (I have a busy third house); dissecting Life’s Biggest Quandaries with my mom friends in the school parking lot (I have three planets in Sagittarius and my north node is in Gemini); and trying to do fun things like reading a book or editing and organizing all of the photos I take (Pisces in my 6th house—my imagination needs a workout every day).  I also love combing through my closet to create new outfits that I’ve never worn before (I have a big Libra signature in my first house), and I’ve been known for wearing way too much jewelry even though I have no plans to go anywhere or do anything (I have Venus in Leo … some people can’t handle it!).  And dessert—I love it way more than normal people (Taurus moon, anyone?).  I’m the person at the party who’s asking, “Hey, do you want that frosting?”

My clients take the time to relearn the sound of their inner voices; their forgotten or overlooked wants and needs; their core values; and their authentic vision for how they wish to spend their days on this earth.

you can chart your own way

When clients contact me, they’re seeking clarity.  They want clarity about themselves and about their lives, and many want clarity regarding their parenting style and relationship with their children.  Of course, a client does not need to be a parent to reap the benefits of understanding her own natal chart.  New clients typically tell me that they …

  •  Have never seen their natal chart and want to learn more about what it is and what it can offer them

  • Would define their lives as “really good!” and “perfectly fine!” ... but something always feels “off.”

  • Want to figure out what really matters to them so they can prioritize these values everyday.

  • Want to jump off the existential hamster wheel and engage daily with meaning and purpose.

  • Desire to remember and rely on the sound of their own inner voice.

  • Have decided to understand and change themselves rather than control others.

  • Are ready to release the best and truest version of themselves that is locked in a box somewhere, dying to get out.

When mothers contact me to discuss their children’s natal charts, they’re typically seeking ease or relief.  All of us are burdened by a culture that puts time at a premium: Few of us have ample time, and most of us wish we had (much) more of it.  It’s typical for mothers to feel that they can’t ever do enough to learn about each of their children, much less to connect meaningfully with each of them on daily basis.  Mothers who want to learn about their children’s charts often tell me:

  • They want to increase their own confidence in parenting.

  • They want to know each of their unique children as completely as possible.

  • They want to figure out at least one clear way to establish consistent, meaningful connection to each of their children.

  • They want the best possible understanding of the bigger picture of their household family unit.

  • They want their children to see and to know them—as a mother and a whole person—as reliable, caring, and attentive.

Mothers gain all of this from their sessions with me.  Additionally, I know that providing philosophical counseling around natal charts helps mothers to feel more compassion for themselves and more empathy for their children.  When we can accept who we are and how we show up in our own charts, we can soften toward the unique quirks of others, especially those of our children.  Our children are just like us: They seek belonging with trusted, caring people.  Knowing your child’s chart gives instant access to providing this sense of belonging.  Few things feel more empowering to a mother than this.

In the end, I don’t give clients “answers” about their lives, and I don’t solve my clients’ “problems.”  My clients become increasingly comfortable with asking themselves the richest and deepest questions about who they are and what they want from their lives.  And they get to do this with a person who’s trained to investigate challenging topics with tremendous depth.

Learning to ask oneself the most honest questions—rather than the “right” questions—can liberate a person who has been imprisoned her whole life.

client testimonials

“As I approached the year leading up to retirement, I became concerned about the future of not working. Identifying myself with a long and successful career, I couldn’t imagine the path to staying relevant in my new non-work world. Heather helped me to put into perspective that retirement is simply the next chapter of my ever-unfolding story of successful transitions. She enabled me to embrace retirement’s freedom to redefine myself and my place in the larger world.”

“As a relatively new mom, I loved being at home with my two year old daughter. But, as a creative person with several ideas I wanted to turn into reality, I wasn’t sure how to find the time and energy to make this happen. My sessions with Heather have been invaluable. She’s helped me to organize and prioritize my ideas, strategize my time, and stay motivated and excited throughout the process. I felt so good about what I had achieved after our first five months working together that I signed up for an additional five months.
